The Center for Civic Engagement
College/School Liaison Group for UNIV 101

UNIV101, Drexel’s freshman experience program, provides an introduction to community-based experiential learning for all admitted first-year students. While curriculum content and design are largely determined by each college/school, a group of College/School Liaisons, representing each college/school, meets regularly to discuss and review issues related to UNIV101.

FAQ

Q. Who selects members of the Liaison Group?
A: Liaisons are selected by each college/school, and serve at the pleasure of their particular college/school.

Q: How often does the Liaison Group meet?
A: Generally speaking, the Liaison Group convenes at least monthly. If a particular issue arises in between meetings, the group is then called together to address that issue.

Q: Where do the Liaison Group meetings occur?
A: The meetings are normally held in the Large Conference Room of Pennoni Honors College (5th floor of McAlister Hall).

Q: What is the Civic Engagement Component, and when are students required to complete it by?
A: Civic Engagement is participation in the public life of the community on issues of public concern.
Civic engagement can take many forms, from volunteerism doing community service, to electoral participation and advocacy. All forms are encouraged by the CCE; however, in order to receive formal civic engagement credit, students must meet the following criteria:
-benefit a registered 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization;
-take part off-campus or, if performed on campus, benefit an off-campus institution or community group;
-involve direct and active service to others, including awareness-raising activities;
-cannot involve active religious proselytizing or religiois instruction;
-cannot be partisan or directly benefit a political party;
-comply with Drexel’s Student Code of Conduct.

Each individual college and school determines when the project must be completed. If a student is not recognized as complete by their own instructor, it is the instructor’s responsibility to inform the student in regards to his/her grade.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Faculty Liaison Group is to offer a periodic assessment of UNIV101. Through regularly scheduled meetings, the liaisons bring a variety of concerns and issues from each college/school, and discuss ways to address these issues and concerns. It is important to note that the Liaison Group serves in an advisory capacity, and does not make decisions concerning course curriculum content or design. This group does, however, have the authority to suggest recommendations for the overall improvement of UNIV101 for our students.

A secondary and equally significant responsibility of individual members of the Liaison Group, is to convey the interests and desires of their respective college/school to the larger body. The learning outcomes and goals of UNIV101 are successfully accomplished through the full participation of each of Drexel’s colleges/schools. Through their role as a conduit, individual liaisons make it possible for us to accomplish the desired learning outcomes and goals of UNIV101.
