Creative Arts Therapy: Art Therapy Specialization
Master of Arts degree, 90.0 quarter credits

About the program
The philosophy of the program integrates knowledge of art psychotherapy with current theoretical and practical approaches to assessment and treatment in such fields as mental health, medicine, and education. Didactic, clinical,
and supervisory aspects of the program are balanced and integrated to provide a foundation of theoretical knowledge and practical application. The program is unique in that faculty members are art therapists and mental health professionals with an interest in the arts who can help students integrate the principles of art therapy with current mental health theory and practice.

The curriculum includes classroom and clinical field placements that occur simultaneously throughout the two-year education. Through experiences in the classroom students in the art therapy program study the theory
behind the creative and complex interaction of the therapist, the patient/client, and the art process. They then apply what they learn in a clinical practicum and internship setting while under the supervision of a qualified art therapist. Individual and group supervision assists the student in acquiring an integrated understanding of art therapy theory and practice. Through this process the students learn the importance of the synthesis of these elements in the art therapy treatment milieu and therapeutic relationship.

For additional information about the program, visit the College of Nursing and Health Professions' Art Therapy web site.
