The Doctor of Philosophy
in Biological Sciences is conferred in recognition of breadth of scholarship
and scientific attainment plus demonstrated ability to complete original
research. A minimum of 90 credits is required beyond the bachelor’s degree.
In addition to a qualifying examination, the Ph.D. student must pass a
candidacy examination and an oral defense of his or her dissertation, which
demonstrates the capacity to perform independent research. Both examinations
are administered by the student’s examining committee.
