Wednesday, May 8, 2024

2:30 PM-4:00 PM

BIOMED Seminar

Title:
Gene Therapy Sector Overview and its Impact on Patients and Healthcare

Speaker:
Rita Johnson-Green
Chief Operating Officer
Alliance for Regenerative Medicine

Details:
Gene therapies are rapidly proliferating globally and are addressing the needs of patients with Inherited retinal disease, Hemophilia B, Spinal muscular atrophy, Duchene muscular dystrophy, and other life-threatening or severely debilitating diseases. Between 2017 and 2022, five gene therapies treating rare genetic diseases received FDA approval. In 2023, five more were approved in that single year.

We will discuss the difference between in-vivo and ex-vivo gene therapy and the go-to-market considerations for each. The commercialization of these therapies has highlighted the need for additional patient care considerations such as patient travel benefits, newborn screening, genetic testing, and fertility preservation. We will also explore gene therapy’s impact on patient’s life expectancy and its anticipated financial impact on our healthcare system. We will conclude with the ultimate goal, globalization, because all people, regardless of their individual or country's wealth, deserve access to life-changing and life-saving therapies.
