Outreach Activities

The Department of Biology has several ongoing outreach programs that benefit the intellectual and environmental health of local communities. These activities are organized by student groups in the department and by department faculty members who lead educational programs funded by external agencies. Explore the sections below to learn more. To discover other service programs offered through Drexel, please visit the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement.

These outreach activities include:

Marine Studies at Barnegat Bay, NJ
Biology Graduate Student Association
NASA From Earth to the Sky

Marine Studies at Barnegat Bay, NJ

Barnegat Bay field station

The Department of Biology marine field station is located at the Lighthouse Center in Waretown, New Jersey. Situated on 194 acres of diverse coastal habitat adjacent to Barnegat Bay, Drexel students have an extraordinary opportunity to participate in research programs and residency ecology courses that focus on the coastal marine ecosystem and nearby Pine Barrens.

Biology Graduate Student Association (BGSA)

The Biology Graduate Student Association (BGSA) encourages and facilitates outreach programs between biology graduate students and the surrounding community. Whether helping to pick-up trash at a local park, or volunteering at a local high school science fair, our members are willing and able to donate their time.

BGSA members have recently participated in the following activities:

Environmental Stewardship

  • BGSA and Drexel Sierra club hosted the Storm Drain Labeling event in May 2010, with over 25 students working to minimize run-off into our local environment and drinking water. Philadelphia storm drains were labeled: “No dumping! Drains to the river.”
  • BSGA volunteered for the 4th Annual Philly Spring Cleanup, picking up litter along the Delaware River Trail.

Expert Scientist Volunteers/Judges

  • The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science’s annual science fair at Cheltenham High School.
  • Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science Research Day in Barnegat, NJ
  • The National Ocean Sciences Bowl “Shore Bowl” in Princeton, NJ

Our efforts to sustain a lasting impact upon the Drexel and Philadelphia communities as responsible citizens continue to grow thanks to our new outreach-oriented position: Service Chair. Please contact the 2010-2011 Service Chair, Ms. Shuana Henley for any further information.

NASA From Earth to the Sky

NASA From Earth to Sky

The NASA "From Earth to the Sky" program is an innovative, hands-on learning experience aimed at increasing awareness about climate change at both the high school and university level. The program brings together faculty with several years of research and teaching experience in global climate change, teachers from the School District of Philadelphia, and two non-profit organizations engaged in global climate change education to offer:

  1. An undergraduate program at Drexel.
  2. A summer program at Drexel with undergraduate, graduate and high school students.
  3. A workshop for high school STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) teachers.

For more information please visit the website dedicated to this program.
