Visiting the Drexel Legacy

Dornbirn

Save the date!
Dornbirn, Austria
June 2010

Travel to the birthplace of Francis Martin Drexel and explore the origin of the Drexel family legacy. Dornbirn is a charming city of 50,000 nestled in the foothill of the Alps – the Vorarlberg. It is a modern, yet quaint place, full of life and steeped in rich history located just east of Zurich, Switzerland.

It was from Dornbirn that Francis Martin Drexel evaded conscription by Napoleon's army to set sail to Philadelphia and establish himself as a portrait painter and banker. His granddaughter, Katherine, and his son, Anthony, would change history, the former by becoming a Saint and the latter by reinventing higher education.

The City of Dornbirn considers Francis Martin Drexel one of, if not, its most important citizen. Highlights of the trip will include a visit to Francis Drexel's birthplace, the Katherine Drexel Chapel and the newly-named Katherine Drexel Street. There will be much sightseeing in this picturesque Austrian village and an opportunity to understand our university in a new light through its founder's family legacy.

Plans for the trip are currently being finalized. If you are interested in receiving more information, e-mail your name, class year and address to alumni@drexel.edu.

Adventures in Ennis
with Bud and Ginny Roemhild '57

Albert ("Bud") and Virginia ("Ginny") Roemhild, graduates of the Class of 1957, know a thing or two about travel.

Both retired, their schedules are kept busy with frequent trips around the world. And now, they can add a summer 2008 trip to Ennis, Ireland with the Drexel Travel Program to that list.

“The trip definitely lived up to our expectations,” Ginny said, shortly after she and her husband returned from their excursion.

Those expectations, based on their first experience with the Drexel Travel Program on a trip to Tuscany in October of 2007, were set high. They explained that because they enjoyed Tuscany so much, they decided to sign up for a second adventure with Drexel to Ireland, expecting another enriching cultural experience.

For more on the Roemhilds' journey through Ireland, visit the Travel Journal.
