Sacramento Area Alumni

On January 5, 2009, Drexel University opened the Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento, a living laboratory for cutting-edge graduate education that blends online and in-class formats.

Even our peers have noticed, including us among U.S. News & World Report's Top 10 Up-and-Coming Schools, "that have recently made striking improvements or innovations – schools everyone should be watching."

Below are news and announcements from the Center for Graduate Studies for our Drexel graduates living or working in the Sacramento area. And, for more information on events and programs in Northern California, visit the Alumni Club of Northern California site here.

Drexel Sacramento graduates are invited to join fellow alumni in the area for a Holiday Dragon Happy Hour on December 20. Guests will gather at Coyote Taphouse in Sacramento at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome to come celebrate the holidays with Drexel Sacramento!

Run to Feed the Hungry

Run to Feed the Hungry
Drexel Sacramento alumni got up early to support The Sacramento Food Bank on Thanksgiving morning. Team Drexel increased in size from 22 members last year, to 33 members this year. Even more exciting, seven Drexel Sacramento alumni on the team were responsible for raising $1,025 of the total $1,886 collected in donations for Team Drexel. This was more than enough to meet the fundraising goal of $1,000 which triggered a Mario the Dragon sighting the morning of the race. Including registration fees, the 2012 Run to Feed the Hungry brought in more than $1 million to the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. It is the largest and most successful Thanksgiving Day race in the U. S. Drexel Sacramento alumni are really making a difference in the community!

40 Under 40
Drexel Sacramento is thrilled to announce that five of its graduates have been named finalists for Sacramento Business Journal's 2012 40 Under 40. Congratulations to Emily Dutch '12, Matt Strugar-Fritsch '13, Kyle Glankler '11, Dean O'Brien '12, and Bobby Roy '13.

Alumni and Student Night at the Sharks

The Northern California Alumni Club hosted the Second Annual Dragons-at-the-Sharks outing on March 8th. We witnessed an exciting 3-2 overtime victory by the San Jose Sharks over the Nashville Predators. Sixteen students and new alumni from the Sacramento campus made the journey to San Jose, joining 20 other Drexel Alumni at HP Pavilion for the sell-out event. It was a great way for the Bay Area alumni and Sacramento area students and alumni to network, while enjoying delicious food and exciting hockey. We are looking forward to planning more events together and continuing to strengthen the relationships between the alumni and the students of Drexel's West Coast campus!

Drexel Honors its First Sacramento Graduates
Sacramento Graduation Celebration

The Drexel University Alumni Association sponsored a reception on Saturday, January 8, 2011, for the first graduates of the Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento.

Held at the Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramento, this historic Drexel event honored 35 students for their achievements: 24 with MBAs, 7 with MS-Higher Education, 2 with MS-Library and Information Science, and 1 with MS-Information Systems.

They were welcomed into the alumni family by James R. Gravesande '84, president of the Alumni Club of Northern California. Each graduate was presented with a Drexel T-shirt and a framed certificate, signed by Sacramento Dean Tobey Oxholm and James B. Dougherty, Jr., Esq., '78, '81, chair of the Drexel University Alumni Association Board of Governors, congratulating them for their success and acknowledging that "The quality of the experience of the students who will follow you has greatly benefitted from your vision, energy, effort, and commitment to success."

A formal commencement ceremony including nearly 100 students and led by Provost Mark Greenberg is being planned for Sacramento in June 2011.

Drexel has First Class of
Sacramento-Educated Alumni!
Graduate Students

Drexel opened the doors to its Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento on January 5, 2009. Three of the initial four master's programs (now there are eight) are ending this month, and 34 students will graduate: 24 with MBAs (LeBow College of Business), 7 with MS-Higher Education (Goodwin College School of Education), and 3 with MS-Library and Information Science (College of Information Science and Technology).

"It's amazing to think how far Drexel has come in just two years," said Jim Gravesande, President of the Northern California Alumni Club who lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area. "The Graduate Center is great. Drexel has great name recognition and support in the region, and the alumni here in Northern California are taking every opportunity to support it. At college fairs, most kids have now heard of and are interested in Drexel, which was nowhere near the case two years ago."

The Alumni Association will sponsor a celebration for the new graduates in January, and then participate in the formal Commencement Ceremony in Sacramento next June – the first ever to be held outside Philadelphia in the University's 120-year history!

An Evening at the Crocker

On November 4, 2010, more than 50 alumni, students, faculty and staff gathered for Sacramento's largest event yet! The event was a reception and tour of the newly-opened Crocker Art Museum. Alumni came from far and wide – not only from the San Francisco Bay Area – and also from around the country, with College of Nursing and Health Professions alumni turning out in numbers thanks to a national Art Therapy conference being held in the city.

“It was exciting to see the students and alumni enjoying each other so much,” said Dr. Ed Bureau, associate clinical professor at Drexel's School of Education. Dr. Bureau is currently in Sacramento to teach his doctoral students. “There sure was a lot of Dragon Pride in that room!” he said.

Drexel Night at the Eagles vs. 49ers
Drexel Tailgate

Picture this: two SUVs, each with hatchbacks up, a Drexel banner prominently hung, surrounded by 50 people wearing Drexel hats and shirts as they hungrily consumed hoagies, hamburgers and Tastykakes in the parking lot before the Eagles game. No, this was not South Philly but San Francisco!

More than a dozen Drexel Sacramento students plus their guests met up with even more Drexel alumni and their guests for the Eagles vs. 49ers game on Sunday, October 10, 2010. It was all possible thanks to the organizing efforts of the Alumni Club of Northern California, the Sacramento Graduate Student Association, and a grant by the Drexel University Alumni Association.

It was a wonderful opportunity for alumni to connect with students, with business cards exchanged and future activities discussed. Then, so large they had to be split into two seating sections, the Dragons loudly cheered as the Birds fought off a last-quarter surge by the 49ers. Click here to view photos from the day.

Next up: the Phillies versus the Giants!!

Alumni Dinner for Shapoor Hashemi '92
Shapoor Hashemi and Tobey Oxholm

Members of the Northern California Alumni Club got together earlier this month to thank long-time President Shapoor Hashemi '92 for his service. Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations, Cristina Geso presented him with a painting of Main Building. The Club also elected Jim Gravesande '84 its 2010-11 president. Joining the celebration in San Francisco was Drexel Senior Vice President and
Sacramento Dean, Tobey Oxholm.

The Inaugural Cohort of the Sacramento Center for Graduate Studies recently recognized the efforts of Northern California Club past president Shapoor Hashemi by making him an Honorary Member of their class. Shown here is Dean Tobey Oxholm presenting Shapoor with the class sweatshirt, a bottle of Drexel Water Boy Wine, and the Certificate of Appreciation. Click here for more photos from the dinner.

The alumni and students are next getting together for the Eagles-49ers game in October, complete with a Philly-style tailgate party before the game!

Alumni, Grad Students “Birdie” To Benefit Inner City High School
Sacramento Golf Outing

The graduate students at Sacramento’s Center for Graduate Studies recently held their first annual golf outing, and they invited the alums from the Northern California Alumni Club. Beyond the fun, the purpose was to raise money for Grant Union High School, one of Sacramento’s inner city high schools.

Office Depot was the lead sponsor, and the event launched a “summer of giving” where the Drexel students will be soliciting contributions from their colleagues and employers to support health and science programs at Grant High, and Office Depot will guarantee “best prices” through December.

Beyond the sun and fun, the outing raised over $600 – a great start to a great service initiative.  It’s yet another example of the best in alumni-student partnerships, in service to our communities.

Pictured here: Eric Lautenbach COE '81; Shapoor Hashemi COE '92; Jim Gravesande COE '84; and Scott Freeman, Sacramento MBA Candidate (December 2010). Not pictured: Sara Lautenbach, Commerce and Engineering, ’81. For more photos from the outing, visit the Alumni Photo Gallery.

LeBow Alumni Invasion
LeBow Alumni

Headed by Dean George Tsetsekos, Alumni Association past chair Maria Charlton ‘82 and current vice chair Dennis Link ’69, ‘70, two dozen alumni and friends of the LeBow College of Business spent April 15, 2010, in Sacramento, California. After VIP tours of the capitol and old city, they were welcomed by scores of Drexel’s newest grad students to the university’s new Graduate Center, where they were able to see how high-tech higher ed has become.  Felix Fernandez, president of Wells Fargo’s Northern California Region, was the guest at a special “View from the Top” and the evening ended with dinner and a surprise City Council Resolution, presented by Councilmember Rob Fong, welcoming the alumni to Sacramento and expressing the city of Sacramento’s appreciation for “bringing excellence in education and service to this region.”

Drexel Sacramento Invites Alumni Anywhere To Leadership Speakers Series

In conjunction with the LeBow College of Business, Drexel’s Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento, California is hosting a novel speaker series called “What It Means To Lead: Coast-to Coast Conversations with Business and Civic Leaders.”

Moderated by LeBow College of Business Associate Dean Frank Linnehan, the guests have been Charles Pizzi, Drexel Trustee and Chair of the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Board, California Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, and Folsom Lake College (CA) Founding President Thelma Scott-Skillman.

These one-hour programs connect students, faculty and alumni in Philadelphia and Sacramento, simulcast over the web, and recorded as podcasts. They provide an intimate look at the values, principles, and strategies of proven leaders, in a uniquely informal but educational setting.

The next Conversation is on Thursday, January 7, and the guest is Ron Mittelstaedt, founding CEO and Chairman of Waste Connections, Inc., a Fortune 500 company headquartered in the Sacramento suburbs. To participate, or to watch for future guests (once each month until the summer), visit the Sacramento Graduate Center Events website.

Sacramento Students Meet Golden Dragons

In another first, six members of the inaugural classes at Drexel’s Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento had lunch with several Golden Dragons and other Drexel alumni in Granite Bay on November 3. The students spoke about why they chose Drexel – an almost complete unknown in the Northern California region a year ago – and how excited they have been to be part of the Drexel family. Senior Vice President Tobey Oxholm, Dean of the Sacramento campus, described the success Drexel has already achieved. As Milfred Austin (Woman’s Med ’54) wrote afterwards, “It was a wonderful afternoon with the addition of new Drexel friends!”
