University Grieves for Alumnus Killed in World Trade Center Attack
The University has learned that alumnus Timothy P. Soulas ’89, who earned a degree in finance, is presumed to have been killed September 11 in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Mr. Soulas, who was managing director of foreign securities with Cantor Fitzgerald Securities, was at work on the 105th floor of the North Tower when AA Flight 11 struck the building. The well-being of all Drexel students on co-op in New York City and Washington, D.C., including one who was at work in the Pentagon, has been confirmed. The University is continuing to monitor information as it is released.

New Head of Co-op Education Named
Martin G. Ford, most recently director of the Career and Internship Center at the University of the Pacific, in Stockton, Calif., is Drexel’s new Dean of Co-operative Education and Career Services. Before his University of Stockton position, Ford was director of career planning and placement at Johnson State College, in Vermont.

Service Learning Program Set to Begin Second Year in 105 Elementary Schools
Through Drexel’s service learning program, all undergraduates participate in meaningful service activities in and around Philadelphia. The activities are carefully integrated into the classroom so they are genuine learning experiences rather than only community service. This year, Drexel’s 2,100 freshmen will work in 105 Philadelphia elementary schools in two important educational programs: Philadelphia Reads (a one-on-one literacy program for students with reading disabilities) and the elementary school curriculum of Junior Achievement. In total, our students will reach approximately 50,000 school children during the 2001-02 academic year.

Construction Begins on Business Complex
Construction on the Philip Johnson-designed Leonard Pearlstein Business Learning Center just west of Matheson Hall has begun. I would like to thank Trustee Melba Pearlstein for her gracious generosity in supporting the center, which is named in honor of her late husband. I would also like to thank Trustee George Krall and his wife Lois for their generous gift for the George and Lois Krall Executive Education Center, which will be housed in the Leonard Pearlstein Business Learning Center.

“Go MAD” for CoMAD
The College of Media Arts & Design, led by Dean Jonathan Estrin, has begun a marketing campaign that will peak the third week of October with an areawide show of support for the College. Stores around Philadelphia and suburbs will be designing display windows featuring the CoMAD logo and slogan "Go MAD". Other elements of the campaign include buttons, T-shirts, stickers and a video featuring celebrities promoting the slogan and the College.

Employee Survey Responses to be Mailed
The findings of a survey of all Drexel and MCP Hahnemann University employees, conducted by Buck Consultants, will be mailed in booklet form to all employees. As a follow up, I and the management team will be hosting informal meetings with all employees of both universities to discuss the findings.

“Celebrate Health” Fair on October 9
The third annual “Celebrate Health” fair, sponsored by the Office of Government and Community Relations, MCP Hahnemann University, Tenet HealthSystem and NBC10, will take place Tuesday, October 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dilworth Plaza at Philadelphia City Hall, 15th and Market streets. The rain date is October 10 at Love Park in JFK Plaza. The event will feature booths staffed by Drexel and MCPHU faculty and students and representatives of Tenet, as well as Philadelphia Health and Fitness Czar Gwen Foster and the staff of her “Fun, Fit and Free” program.
