Lawley on Space Station Task Force
Dr. Alan Lawley
, Grosvenor Professor of Materials Engineering, will serve on a research task group for the International Space Station. The group will advise the National Research Council’s Space Studies Board on life and microgravity research in space. The task force is chaired by former astronaut and Drexel alum Dr. James Bagian ‘73, Hon. ‘87.

Personick to Head NRC Committee
Dr. Stewart Personick, E. Warren Colehower Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was named chair of the National Research Council’s Committee on Critical Infrastructure and the Law. This ad hoc committee will be made up of leaders from various critical infrastructure industries, lawyers knowledgeable about the legal issues that discourage or encourage private sector entities from sharing information about critical infrastructure vulnerabilities, and senior government officials.

Astronaut to Meet Students
Drexel alumnus and astronaut Paul Richards ‘87 will meet with accepted students and their families at “Sneak Preview” weekend on April 22. Richards served as flight navigator on NASA’s Discovery mission in March. More than 1,200 students and family members are expected to attend the event organized by the Office of Enrollment Management.

Singapore Delegation Visits Campus Several Singapore government officials and business leaders visited Drexel in April to learn about our experiential learning program. The delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan and Senior Minister of State Peter Chen, is touring U.S. co-operative education universities and colleges. The group met with Engineering Dean Selçuk Güçeri to discuss Drexel’s engineering curriculum and toured the campus.

 

“Great Works” Class to Visit Yosemite
Eighteen undergraduate students taking this semester’s “Great Works” course on Yosemite National Park will hike through and explore Yosemite in May. One of the students will produce a documentary of the trip. The course is being taught by Dr. Robert Brulle, assistant professor in the School of Environmental Science, Engineering, and Policy.

Drexel Receives $10.8 Million ACIN Contract
At a check signing ceremony in Camden, N.J. on April 10, Drexel formally announced its $10.8 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense for a military research and education project in Camden that will focus on applying emerging technologies to warfare of the future. Project ACIN (Applied Communications and Information Networking) will address the technological challenges and demands of the 21st century for the warfare and peacekeeping missions of the U.S. military. Drexel is working with Sarnoff Corporation, of Princeton, and the University City Science Center Port of Technology in the effort, aimed at leveraging cutting-edge technology and educating U.S. military personnel about its military applications.

Annual Job Fair Huge Success
The annual Drexel Job Fair sponsored by the Career Management Center on April 11 was the largest in University history. More than 1,300 students and alumni packed the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center, which was filled to capacity with 250 employers. Representatives from leading pharmaceutical companies, four of the top five national accounting firms and many other industry leaders were on hand to recruit candidates.
