Alumnus Ed Bossone ‘53 Donates $10 Million
It is my pleasure to inform you that alumnus Edmund Bossone ’53 has donated
$10 million toward construction of the recently announced Research Enterprise
Center designed by I.M. Pei. The center will be named in Mr. Bossone’s
honor. Mr. Bossone is a retired senior engineer from PECO Energy. He received
his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the Richard C. Goodwin College
of Evening and Professional Studies. I have conveyed the University’s
great appreciation to Mr. Bossone for his generosity and loyalty to Drexel.
Dean Kamen to Speak at Research Day May 1
Drexel and MCP Hahnemann faculty and student researchers will come together
for Research Day. The third annual event, under the direction of Dr.
Harvill Eaton, senior vice president for research and graduate
studies, will take place May 1 at 30th Street Station.
Dean Kamen, one of America’s leading inventors, founder of FIRST
(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and creative
force behind the soon to be announced “IT,” will give the keynote speech
at the invitation-only dinner.
Among the day’s demonstrations will be the AbioCor™ artificial heart,
soon to be tested in clinical trials by MCP Hahnemann University physicians.
Last year’s Research Day attracted more than 300 research posters.

Internet usage by students, faculty and staff has skyrocketed during
the past five years. Yipes™ Communications, Inc., the leading provider
of managed optical IP networks, and the Office of Information Resources
and Technology, under the direction of Vice President John Bielec,
are working to upgrade Drexel’s Internet connection to 100 megabits-per-second
by June, a five-fold increase from one year ago. .
Researchers Partner with Jefferson
The National Institutes of Health awarded $1 million to Dr. Michelle
Marcolongo, professor of materials engineering, and Dr. Steven
Kurtz, research associate professor of biomedical engineering, to
study the range of motion and other qualities of polyethylene hip components.
Researchers from Thomas Jefferson University and Case Western Reserve
are collaborating with Marcolongo and Kurtz on the project.
Baiada Center Names First Student Winners
The Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology announced
the winners of the first round of its student business plan competition.
Four teams and one individual student each received $1,000 prizes. The
winning business plans were: Soirae, a cosmetics firm for women of color;
Connected Home, an online home networking service; Extreme Racing, an
outdoor park for skaterboards and motorcycles; Digital Amplifier, a specialized
digital audio amplifier manufacturer; and 3D Modeling from Kite Aerial
Photography.
