Emergency Preparedness Plan: Introduction The Drexel University Preparedness Plan was developed to minimize panic and confusion in the event of an emergency on the University City Main Campus, the Center City Hahnemann Campus, the Queen Lane Medical Campus or within the Drexel community.
The Drexel University Preparedness Plan is meant to coordinate the strategic and tactical responses of the University and their agencies to any type of crisis or emergency that could arise.
The authority to declare a campus state of emergency rests with the President of Drexel University or his designee in the event of a major catastrophic emergency.
Declaration of an Emergency
In the event of a major catastrophic emergency, the University will work directly with the city, state, local businesses, other institutions and federal support agencies to best manage the situation.
Major catastrophic emergencies include, but are not limited to: Large Scale Disorders Large Scale Natural Disasters Man-Made Disasters
During a campus emergency, the Drexel Emergency Response Team (D.E.R.T.), will take immediate action to implement the appropriate procedures to manage the emergency. These procedures are meant to safeguard persons and property and to secure facilities.
The D.E.R.T. Team Incident Commander, along with Senior Management will consult with the President regarding the emergency.
When an emergency declaration is made, there may be instances when only authorized individuals are permitted to be in the area.
In addition, only faculty and staff members who have been assigned to D.E.R.T. or have been issued an emergency pass by the Department of Public Safety, Fire and Life Safety, or Environmental Health and Safety will be allowed to enter the immediate area of the emergency.
In the event of an emergency occurring in or around the University’s campuses, or which involves University property, The D.E.R.T. Incident Commander or his designee will dispatch university officials to determine the extent of the emergency.
At the conclusion of the emergency, the University President, or his designee, will issue a statement declaring the emergency over, thus allowing the University to return to normal operating procedures.
If necessary, business continuity plans will be put into effect to address any long term consequences.
In the event of an actual emergency, the university’s main webpage, (www.drexel.edu) will provide up to date information. Other instruments of communication will include but are not limited to: text messaging, local radio/TV stations, email, voicemail, alarm systems, word of mouth and through speaker systems used by the emergency responders.
