Women's Health

Divas Out Walking Program In the summer of 2005, the Office of Government and Community Relations was awarded a $2500 grant from the Region III DHHS Office on Women's Health to implement the Divas Out Walking program, designed to influence women of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds to increase their physical activity. Over 150 women registered for this six-week walking program through multiple orientations conducted at four sites across the city. Participants used pedometers to track the steps they walked each day and submitted weekly logs to the office. Drawings for prizes were conducted and four winners selected every two weeks. Program evaluation indicated high levels of success with increasing activity and program satisfaction.

Drexel's College of Medicine Institute for Women's Health and Leadership was designated a DHHS Center of Excellence in Women's Health in 1996. From that time to the present, the Office of Government and Community Relations has been providing direction for the community outreach component of the Center of Excellence. Public education programs such as the "Conversations" about Women's Health are offered to widely diverse audiences, from executive women to residents of grassroots African American, Latino and Asian communities.

Stop Smoking Program for Women Now in its sixth year of funding from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Drexel's Stop Smoking Program for Women provides ongoing classes in cessation for women from across the city that are interested in quitting. See Tobacco Control Project for more details.
