POLICY: Jury Duty
Policy Number: HR-35
Effective Date: July 2002
Revisions: June 2002, June 2000
Responsible Officer: Associate Dean, Planning and Operations
PURPOSE:
This policy was established to define the College of Medicine's position with
respect to employees who are called to serve on jury duty or who are
subpoenaed to appear in court.
I. POLICY:
The College of Medicine supports employees who fulfill their duty as citizens to
their communities by serving as jurors. If they are summoned for jury duty or are
subpoenaed to appear in court, they will be excused from work for the period of
time served. Service includes required reporting for jury duty when summoned,
whether or not they are selected.
II. ELIGIBILITY:
This policy applies to all College of Medicine non-faculty employees.
III. DEFINITIONS:
Jury Duty is defined as time spent when required to appear in court to serve as a
juror.
IV. PROCEDURES:
A. The employee must notify her/his supervisor for each day he/she serves on
the jury. The jury duty summons or court subpoena must be presented to
document the necessity of the absence.
B. If an employee is subpoenaed for other than jury duty, he/she will not receive
regular pay for time lost, and it will not affect her/his attendance record. The
employee can be paid for that day using their available vacation time.
C. Employees will be paid their regular salary for the days they serve on jury
duty and are required to remit the check issued them by the court.
D. An employee on an unpaid leave of absence is not eligible for jury duty
compensation.
E. Absences due to jury duty will not be included when considering an
employee's attendance record. These absences should be documented, but
should not be considered as an occurrence when determining
absenteeism/lateness for disciplinary purposes.
Additional Information: Inquiries regarding this policy can be directed to the Human Resources
Department.
