For current Drexel University students or transfer students interested in a career in education, the School of Education offers two distinct options: the BS in Education program and the BS/MS in Education accelerated degree program. BS/MS students simultaneously pursue a bachelor’s degree (in Education or in any accredited undergraduate major) along with one of five School of Education Master of Science degrees; they can earn both of these degrees in as few as five years.
School of Education Overview
In the 2007 edition of U.S. News & World Report, the School of
Education is recognized as one of “America’s Best Graduate Schools”
based on such key criteria as academic reputation, selectivity, faculty
resources and research. We offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral
degrees in addition to a number of certification programs. The School of Education is home to the award-winning Math Forum @ Drexel (www.mathforum.org) and the Drexel Center for the Prevention of School Violence.
BS Program
Students transferring into the School of Education from another Drexel University program or from another college or university can select between the BS and the BS/MS programs. The BS option is based on a traditional four-year program model, while the BS/MS option is based on a five-year program model. The undergraduate curricula for the BS and the BS/MS programs are identical.
BS/MS Program
This program is designed to provide undergraduates majoring in any subject (including education) with the preparation and credentials to pursue an expanded variety of career options related to education. For instance, a student wanting to pursue a career in institutional advancement, financial management, or institutional research for a college or university could major in Business Administration and earn an MS in Higher Education; a student interested in teaching high school biology could major in Biology and earn an MS in the Science of Instruction. BS/MS students begin work on the master’s degree in their pre-junior or junior year, taking undergraduate and graduate courses at the same time.
Master of Science Coursework
BS/MS students choose one of the following master’s programs:
MS in Educational Administration (offered online)
MS in Global and International Education (offered online)
MS in Higher Education (offered online)
MS in the Science of Instruction (offered online or on campus)
MS in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum (offered on campus)
Each program is designed with the flexibility for students to pursue various concentrations or individually designed study. Students can also pursue a variety of postgraduate certifications, including School Principal, Instructional Technology Specialist, and Teaching English as a Second Language. For detailed descriptions and additional information about Drexel’s advanced degrees in education, contact the Office of Graduate Admissions or visit the School of Education website at www.drexel.edu/soe.
Certification Curricula
One of the strengths of our program is that students enroll in their content courses (science, mathematics, and liberal arts classes) with students in other majors throughout the University. This helps to ensure a mastery of content knowledge that enables them to mentor future students. Distinct curricula have been designed for each of the following areas of certification. Students are encouraged to incorporate coursework from a second certification area with the initial certification area of study.
Biology (Grades 7–12)
Chemistry (Grades 7–12)
Early Childhood Education (Birth – Grade 3)
(Pending PA Department of Education approval)
Earth and Space Science (Grades 7–12)
Elementary Education (Grades K–6)
English (Grades 7–12)
Environmental Education (Grades K–12)
General Science (Grades 7–12)
Mathematics (Grades 7–12)
Physics (Grades 7–12)
Social Studies (Grades 7–12)
Special Education (Birth – Grade 12)
Drexel Co-op
Drexel University has long been known for its co-operative education program, through which students combine periods of full-time, career-related employment with their studies. The co-op in education consists of two three-month work experiences completed during the summers following a student’s sophomore and junior years. The goal of the co-op program in education is to provide real-world experiences for future teachers to use in their classrooms. Internship employment is a requirement for all School of Education majors, who pursue varied positions geared directly to their area(s) of certification.
Field Experience/Student Teaching
BS and BS/MS students work with local teachers in school-based settings to provide one-on-one and small-group academic coaching/mentoring to area school children. A 10-week Pre-Student Teaching program enables students in their junior year to observe and gain classroom experience through lesson planning and small-group activities. During the 12-week Student Teaching program, seniors teach full-time; learn school policies; design and develop lessons, units, and projects; attend a field seminar; and keep a journal of their student teaching experiences.
Faculty
The School of Education faculty consists of highly dedicated and talented full- and part-time professors and instructors. All of our full-time faculty members are doctorally prepared and have extensive experience as classroom teachers, school administrators, and education consultants. They are widely published, have given numerous conference presentations, and continuously participate in funded research. In addition, they have received numerous honors and awards for their accomplishments and are active members in a variety of professional organizations related to education. All of our undergraduate courses are taught by full-fledged instructors rather than by teaching assistants or graduate students.
Students
Education students participate in numerous on-campus athletics, clubs, and organizations, including Future Educators of Drexel (FEDs). Members of FEDs organize community service opportunities and social events and have established professional affiliations with the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, and the National Science Teachers Association.
Career Opportunities
Our graduates are highly valued in today’s job market for their unique combination of co-op and student teaching experience. The math-, science-, and technology-related certifications that students receive from Drexel are among the most marketable certification areas for graduates seeking teaching positions. Most of our graduates pursue careers as elementary, middle, or high school teachers, although about 15 percent pursue education-related careers in the humanities or social sciences or work in science museums or education-related companies.
Resources
Facilities
Because the School of Education is located in the Korman Center, which also houses the Information Resources and Technology Department, Education students have easy access to the valuable resources of the University computing and technology hub. We have a research and demonstration laboratory fully equipped with Mac and PC laptop computers, a multimedia projector, and SMART© technology to accommodate presentations. Education students can also take advantage of the Curriculum Library, which contains more than 1,500 volumes of curriculum from the School District of Philadelphia and other surrounding school districts, along with education-related books and resources needed for research purposes.
Technology in Teaching and Learning
All students in the BS and BS/MS in Education programs receive an iPod upon enrollment and are exposed to technology designed specifically for educators. Our technology-enhanced learning, including our iPods in Education Initiative, helps students develop creative uses for technology and prepares them to take leadership in their schools for integrating technology with instructional activities.
The Math Forum @ Drexel
Operating under the School of Education, The Math Forum @ Drexel provides math-related resources, materials, activities, person-to-person interactions, and educational products and services that enrich and support teaching and learning in an increasingly technological world. The Math Forum’s online community includes teachers, students, researchers, parents, educators, and citizens at all levels who have an interest in math and math education. Education students can use Math Forum resources and gain valuable experience.
Center for the Prevention of School Violence
The mission of the Center for the Prevention of School Violence is to help prevent violence and improve the academic performance of disadvantaged and minority youth. The center conducts research and provides technical support to teachers, administrators, parents, University faculty, students, and other stakeholders so that they can structure violence prevention activities and programs based on creative strengths and problem-solving strategies.
