UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR'S ROLE
AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The University Supervisor oversees the professional development of the university student to facilitate growth in classroom teaching, share inquiries into reflective practice, and mentor the student to be a professional, collegial educator (Hargraves and Fullan, 1999).
The University Supervisor:
- Provides orientation of the University student to the cooperating school to which the student has been assigned and facilitates professional development.
- Communicates to the Cooperating Teacher and to the Education Field Coordinator what the University student is learning with regard to constructivist teaching and learning, best practice methods, reflective assessments, unit and lesson planning, and other relevant topics addressed in the Student Teaching Seminar.
- Observes each assigned Field Experience Student in the field at a prearranged date and time, and evaluates the progress made by the student. (The student provides the University Supervisor with a journal page and the lesson plan for the observation.)
- Provides feedback with regard to professional progress made by the Field Experience Student, e.g., improvement of teaching, interactions with students, and classroom management.
- The University Supervisor is responsible for the post-observation conference which should focus on the following:
- Issues important to the student teaching effectiveness.
- Provision of feedback to improve future teaching.
- Constructive analysis of the student? performance with emphasis on strengths.
- Enable the student to find alternative solutions to address those aspect of teaching that are unsatisfactory and continue to develop those that are satisfactory.
