Pre-Student Teaching

Student's Role and Responsibilities

The Student:

  3. Learns about the school community and carefully follows the policies and regulations of the school, including the reporting of any absence or emergency to the Cooperating Teacher and University Supervisor. Each university student is expected to conduct him or herself professionally in all aspects of teaching, including his or her appearance and all interactions with teachers and students.
  4. Registers for the course EDUC 320: Professional Studies in Instruction. The course is designed to develop skills in creating learning communities, applying research-based pedagogy, designing standards-based lessons and units, integrating technology into instruction, classroom management and discipline, responsiveness to cultural diversity, identification of learning resources, and identification of current educational issues.
  5. Develops lesson plans with the standards, learning goals, performance outcomes, procedures, materials and assessments clearly stated. These plans should be submitted to the Cooperating Teacher at least several days prior to teaching so that the plans may be reviewed together.
  6. Begins the teaching assignment with observations of the classroom. The pre-student teacher should strive to be involved in instruction as soon as possible and continue developing professionally throughout the term. The Cooperating Teacher will serve as the primary mentor. However, the rest of the Education Team (the University Supervisor and the EDUC 320 professor) will also be available for consultation and advice.
  7. Keeps a reflective journal to document what he or she is learning during the experience. If possible, each Pre-Student Teacher should videotape two lessons using the guidelines on the EDUC 320 syllabus.
