Student's Role and Responsibilities
The Student:
- Will be in the field for ten weeks, three hours per day, five
days per week, totaling a minimum of 15 hours per week. The Pre-Student
Teaching Field Experience normally occurs from 8:30 a.m. through lunch.
- Provides the Cooperating Teacher with an introductory letter,
describing interests, skills and talents, and educational goals. This
letter should be presented to the Cooperating Teacher prior to the
first day of the teaching assignment.
- Learns about the school community and carefully follows the policies
and regulations of the school, including the reporting of any absence
or emergency to the Cooperating Teacher and University Supervisor.
Each university student is expected to conduct him or herself professionally
in all aspects of teaching, including his or her appearance and all
interactions with teachers and students.
- Registers for the course EDUC 320: Professional Studies in Instruction.
The course is designed to develop skills in creating learning communities,
applying research-based pedagogy, designing standards-based lessons
and units, integrating technology into instruction, classroom management
and discipline, responsiveness to cultural diversity, identification
of learning resources, and identification of current educational issues.
- Develops lesson plans with the standards, learning goals, performance
outcomes, procedures, materials and assessments clearly stated. These
plans should be submitted to the Cooperating Teacher at least several
days prior to teaching so that the plans may be reviewed together.
- Begins the teaching assignment with observations of the classroom.
The pre-student teacher should strive to be involved in instruction
as soon as possible and continue developing professionally throughout
the term. The Cooperating Teacher will serve as the primary mentor.
However, the rest of the Education Team (the University Supervisor
and the EDUC 320 professor) will also be available for consultation
and advice.
- Keeps a reflective journal to document what he or she is learning
during the experience. If possible, each Pre-Student Teacher should
videotape two lessons using the guidelines on the EDUC 320 syllabus.
