Working as a Teacher in the Philadelphia School District (Presented Wednesday, October 3, 2007)
Mr. Jim Alton, head of recruitment at the Philadelphia School District, and Ms. Wilma Guzman-Perez, recruitment specialist in the Teacher Welcome Center, discussed issues pertinent to new teachers, such as teacher benefits, incentives, on-going education, mentoring, and job movement, and also discussed aspects of the application and hiring processes.

Annie Fetter of the Math Forum at Drexel University led Live Classroom participants on an interactive tour through the Math Forum website, highlighting resources particularly helpful to math students and teachers.
=================================================================================Using a SmartBoard as a Teaching Tool (Presented Tuesday, April 3, 2007)
Dr. Michael Scheuermann, director of online learning in the Office of Information Resources and Technology (IRT), demonstrated how teachers can use SmartBoards in conjunction with laptop or desktop computers and digital projectors to present educational and training materials in innovative ways.

Maximizing Library and Media Resources (Presented Wednesday, October 18, 2006)Tim Siftar, reference librarian for the University's libraries, demonstrated how teachers and librarians work best as a team to leverage services, tools and resources. He showed new offerings from Drexel libraries that supplement common resources in Pennsylvania K-12 settings, especially favorite tools and Web sites for teaching math and science. Participants were invited to share examples of successful relationships between instructors and librarians, and took away tipsheets and lists of free resources.

Inquiry-Based Science Teaching (presented Tuesday, February 28, 2006)
Mr. Doug Ross, an 8th-grade science teacher at Friends’ Central School, presented an interactive seminar on integrating inquiry with standards and benchmarks. Attendees participated in a fun, short open-ended problem-solving activity that demonstrated various principles that can be used in any classroom. A short clip of inquiry-based science being implemented in a real-world science class was also presented. The techniques discussed and demonstrated in this seminar helped any teacher of any subject.==================================================================================
PPST--Test-Taking Tips (presented Thursday, January 12, 2006)
Part of the teacher certification process is taking the PPST (Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Assessment). Experts who lead classes on how to prepare for the PPST were on hand to deliver tips and answer questions from the seminar attendees.==================================================================================
The Teacher Hiring Process (presented Thursday, November 3, 2005)
Wilma Guzman-Perez, a recruiter in the Recruiting Department for the School District of Philadelphia, and Cyvi Levin, a Teacher Mentor in the School District of Philadelphia, were the speakers . Ms. Guzman-Perez answered questions concerning all aspects of the hiring process and also discussedd the “Roll Out The Red Carpet” event for prospective teachers, the next event which took place on November 9, 2005.==================================================================================
Teaching Math and Science in Philadelphia (presented Thursday, October 6, 2005)
Moderated by William O'Connor, a former math teacher and department head in the Philadelphia Public School System, this seminar featured a forum of math and science teachers who are currently teaching in Philadelphia. They related their experiences, answered audience questions and addressed current education issues from a teacher's perspective.==================================================================================
Promoting Girls' Inclusion in Math and Science (presented June 2, 2005)
Thirteen years ago, the American Association of University Women published a landmark study, "How Schools Shortchange Girls." Since then, the gap between boys and girls in the number taking math and science classes is diminishing. But important gender differences in the kinds of courses taken cannot be ignored.Ms. Uma Jayaraman, chair of the Science Department at Cheltenham High School, spoke on initiatives to encourage girls to remain involved in math and science courses through high school and beyond.

In 1995 while teaching physics in North Jersey high school, Dr. Mary Jo Grdina received a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Grant to study Physics on Fifth Avenue. Starting at the Empire State Building, where acceleration in an elevator is examined, and working north to Central Park, where the Carousel provides a study in rotational motion, Dr. Grdina will share with us a way to make science and mathematics real for students.
