Students from Goodwin College's Sport Management graduate program organized a Bowl for the Cure fundraiser as their project for the Sports Tournaments and Events course taught by Amy Giddings, an auxiliary instructor for the program.
For this inaugural event, sponsored by Mitchell & Ness and hosted by the North Bowl Lounge & Lanes, the Sport Management graduate program and City 6 schools came together to raise money for Coaches vs. Cancer.
Local coaches, professional athletes, and celebrities joined attendees from local colleges and universities to bowl in support of the American Cancer Society. The event included a silent auction with valuable sports memorabilia including an autographed basketball from potential #1 NBA pick Michael Beasley of Kansas State, a football autographed by John Runyan, and a hat signed by Brad Lidge, in addition to other items from local schools and professional teams. The event raised $4,482 and all proceeds will benefit cancer research.
Attendees included NBC 10 Sports Anchorman John Clark, Drexel women’s basketball coach Denise Dillon, Temple men’s basketball coach Fran Dunphy, Drexel men’s basketball coach Bruiser Flint, LaSalle University men's basketball coach John Giannini, Jimmy V Foundation “Comeback Player of the Year” Nicole Hester, St. Joseph's University men’s basketball coach Phil Martelli, and the University of Pennsylvania’s men’s basketball coach Glen Miller.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This program empowers coaches, their teams, and local communities to fight cancer. More than 500 Division I, II, and III college coaches and more than 100 high school coaches are involved with this program and have helped to raise nearly $40 million since its inception in 1993.
