Local High School Students Attend Semi-Annual Race Car Competition, April 25, 2008
On Friday, April 25, the Applied Engineering Technology program at Goodwin College hosted its semi-annual AET Race Car Competition.
This spring, 26 students from Franklin Learning Center, High School of Engineering and Science, and John P. Stevens High School, participated in the event. The students worked with AET faculty — including Richard Chiou, Ph.D.; William Danley, Ph.D.; Michael Mauk, Ph.D.; and Jacek Milbrandt — to construct small motorized race cars with changeable gear ratios.
During the competition, eight teams raced their cars for the fastest time. The fastest car was constructed by Malik Baynard, Brandon Ballard, and Kenneth Walker from the High School of Engineering and Science. The second- and third-place winners were from the High School of Engineering and Science and Franklin Learning Center, respectively.

In addition to learning about engineering and the influence of gear trains on moving objects, students toured Goodwin’s state-of-the-art AET laboratories, including the Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) of Materials, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Electrical Engineering & Electronics, and Robotics and Mechatronics labs. Participants were served lunch and given Drexel t-shirts at the event. Winners were awarded cash prizes and trophies.
