Style Sheet for Contributors
Use the following guidelines in preparing your article for submission and publication.
1. Length and format: Manuscripts should generally not exceed 10,000 words, not including endnotes. Please submit manuscripts double-spaced.
2. Software: We prefer MS Word or "rich text format" submissions. These may be sent as email attachments directly to our editorial offices: americas@drexel.edu
3. Orthography: Use American spelling rather than British. When in doubt, consult The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 3d ed.
4. Capitalization: Try to use as few capitals as possible. Do not capitalize words such as colonial, republic (referring to a specific country), audiencia, viceroy, bishopric. Do, however, capitalize "church" when referring to the Roman Catholic Church.
5. Italics of foreign words: Do not italicize commonly known Spanish words such as cédula, encomienda, hacienda, audiencia, gobernador, etc. Other foreign words should be italicized only the first time they are used.
6. Numbers: Spell out numbers less than 11. Spell out numbers for centuries. Examples: nine, 22, nineteenth century.
7. Dates: When referring to decades, do not use apostrophes. Example: 1830s.
8. Acknowledgements: Acknowledgements should precede endnotes and be marked with an asterisk (*).
9. Citation of sources: Submit articles with endnotes rather than footnotes. Follow these examples:
Archival Sources: Please maintain consistency when citing primary or archival sources.
Books: Author, Title (Place of Publication: Publisher, Date), p(p). page number(s).
Example: Peter Winn, The Changing Face of the Americas (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1999), p. 150.
For subsequent citations of the same book: Author’s Last Name, Shortened Title, p(p). page number(s).
Example: Winn, Changing Face, pp. 12-14.
Articles: Author, "Title of Article," Title of Journal volume:number (month year), p(p). page number(s).
Example: Jeffrey M. Pilcher, "Tamales or Timbales: Cuisine and the Negotiation of Mexican National Identity, 1821-1911," The Americas 53:2 (October 1995), pp. 193-216.
For subsequent citations of the same article: Author’s Last Name, "Shortened Title," p(p). page number(s).
Example: Pilcher, "Tamales," p. 195.
Additional Endnote Instructions:
Please separate each citation within endnotes with a semicolon.
Use Ibid. (capitalized and without italics) for citations that repeat the previous source citation; if the page number is different use Ibid., p(p). page number(s).
Do not use op. cit.
