The Americas

Style Sheet for Book and Film Reviewers
Please note that The Americas does not accept unsolicited reviews of books or films. If you are interested in reviewing for the journal, please contact the editorial office: americas@drexel.edu
Software: While most software can be translated, we prefer MS Word submissions.
Orthography: Use American spelling rather than British. When in doubt, consult The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 3d ed.
Numbers: Spell out numbers less than 11. Spell out numbers for centuries. Examples: nine, 22, nineteenth century.
Capitalization: Try to use as few capitals as possible. Do not capitalize words such as colonial, republic (referring to a specific country), audiencia, viceroy, bishopric. Do, however, capitalize "church" when referring to the Roman Catholic Church.
Page citation for direct quotes: All direct quotes taken from the book/film must be followed by a page number in parenthesis immediately following the quotation but before the period if at the end of a sentence. Example: "It was always a question or rebellion" (p. 106).
Italics of foreign words: Do not italicize commonly known Spanish words such as cédula, encomienda, hacienda, audiencia, gobernador, etc. Other foreign words should be italicized only the first time they are used.
Dates: When referring to decades, do not use apostrophes. Example: 1830s.
Foreign language books: Give the title using the capitalization style of the particular language. For example, for Spanish books, capitalize only the first word and proper names..
Referring to the book being reviewed and citing other works: Refrain from repeating the title of the book being reviewed. If other works are mentioned in the corpus of the review, please cite the author's name, title of the book (no subtitle), and the date of publication in parentheses following the title. Do not include direct quotations from works other than that under review.
Use of footnotes in reviews: Book/film reviews may not include footnotes/endnotes of any length. All notes will be cut in the editing process.
Headings: Please type the citation of the work under review at the top of the review.
For books, use the following format:
Populism in Peru: The Emergence of the Masses and the Politics of Social Control. By Steve Stein. Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1980. Pp. xvi, 296. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. $49.95 cloth; $21.50 paper.
