Drexel Memorial for Dr. Vivien Thweatt- January 5th, 2009
The Drexel community is saddened to announce the passing of the founding Director of International Area Studies, Dr. Vivien M. Thweatt, on Thursday, November 6, 2008. Dr. Thweatt had been residing in Sewanee, Tennessee since her retirement from Drexel in 2002.
Dr. Thweatt, Associate Professor of Humanities, had a long and noteworthy career at the University. She joined the Drexel faculty in 1980 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities & Communication. Dr. Thweatt was instrumental in developing the interdisciplinary International Area Studies program at Drexel in 1987 and was Director of the program until 2002.
Dr. Thweatt received her bachelor’s degree at Randolph Macon College and taught Latin and French in secondary schools while raising her family in the various cities and countries where her husband, LCDR. Robert C. Thweatt, Jr., USN, was stationed. She completed her master's degree at Middlebury College, and earned her doctorate in French Literature at Bryn Mawr College. Her doctoral thesis "La Rochefoucauld and the 17th Century Concept of the Self" was published by Librairie Drosz, Geneva, in 1978.
Dr. Thweatt is survived by her daughter, son, and two grandchildren. Drexel will hold a memorial service for faculty, staff, students, and alumni on January 5th, 2009 in MacAlister Hall 2019/2020 (3250-60 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia PA 19104) from 4pm to 6pm. Memorial contributions may be given to the Gott Endowment for the Vivien M. Thweatt International Scholarship Fund at Drexel University, Office of Institutional Advancement, 3141 Chestnut Street, Suite 310, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
