What is the Freshman Reading Program?

  • Incoming freshmen complete a reading assignment before they arrive on campus: this year's book is Servants of the Map by Andrea Barrett.

  • New choice made each year by the Freshman English Advisory Committee assisted by other members of the faculty throughout the University.

  • Links to the book are made in freshman English classes and other courses throughout the University.

  • The book addresses a variety of issues and topics related to subjects across the University.

  • The author visits campus and speaks to our community: Andrea Barrett will visit the Drexel campus on November 14th and 15th, 2007.

  • The author conducts a Master Class for winners of a writing contest.

  • An online discussion board is maintained on topics related to the book.

Aim of the Freshman Reading Program

“… to allow freshmen to share a common experience as a foretaste of the intellectual inquiry and discourse they will find at Drexel University. The reading assignment will showcase the varied nature of academic discourse throughout the University.”
