Derek Soles has a Ph. D. in English Education from the University of Victoria. His areas of specialization are theory, research, and pedagogy in written composition and methods of teaching literature. He is the author of four books, including The Prentice Hall Guide to Understanding Literature and Essentials of Academic Writing. He has articles in many scholarly journals, including The English Journal, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, and College English. He is the recipient of a National Council of Teachers of English "Best Article of the Year Award."

Dr. Soles teaches several courses in the Department of English and Philosophy, including Readings in Poetry and Freshman Writing.
