Green Globes: Another Drexel First


Sounds eco-friendly, but what exactly IS Green Globes®?

Green Globes® is a revolutionary green building guidance and assessment program that offers an effective, practical, and affordable way to affect the overall environmental performance and sustainability of commercial buildings.

Green Globes® is an easy-to-use web application that aids architects, engineers, construction professionals, government officials, owners and building operators in evaluating, quantifying, and improving the environmental friendliness and sustainability of new building projects, as well as major renovations.

Using Green Globes® enables project teams to focus on sustainability, gives them options when considering environmental improvements during the design and delivery process, and allows them to evaluate and rate the benefits of different design scenarios.

So what does that mean for Drexel?

With a significant amount of new construction under way on campus, there's no better time to make sure that the University reaches its sustainability goals, and to integrate environmentally-friendly design into all of its latest construction projects.

Drexel is the first university to adopt Green Globes® comprehensively through University policy, for all new construction and existing campus buildings. Green Globes® will be used to measure the operations of all five of new construction projects that total nearly $200 million. Assessing the environmental integrity of Drexel's new buildings will help the University benchmark and improve its energy and environmental performance.

Currently under construction projects at Drexel include:

  • Recreation Center, an 84,000-square-foot addition to the Daskalakis Athletic Center will collect storm water to be re-used for flushing toilets. The Integral glass facade and roof light scoops will eliminate the use of electric lighting during the day in 87% of the interior occupied space.
  • Millennium Hall, a 17-story, 110,000-square-foot student residence incorporates a 3,000-square-foot green roof to reduce storm water run-off and heat-island effect. The building's envelope is made of a rain screen panel system to provide solar shading.
  • The Integrated Sciences Building, a 130,000-square-foot facility incorporating classrooms, research and teaching labs, faculty offices, and a ground floor cafe. The five-story building will include a multi-story plant wall (Bio Wall). The plants will filter the air removing carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds while naturally cooling the air during the summer months and act as a humidifier in the winter.
  • Northside Dining Terrace, a 5,000 square foot dining terrace and food court. The glass facade will incorporate shading elements to reduce heat gain.
  • Queen Lane Building Addition, a three-story, 26,000 square-foot addition under construction at the Drexel University College of Medicine's Queen Lane Medical Campus. The addition will incorporate a green roof to manage storm water.
