CART / Typewell
Computer Aided Real-Time Translation (CART) and Typewell are types of services provided by professional Service Providers. This type of technology allows the CART reporter (Service Provider) to create a written translation of the spoken word into English, using a variety of equipment and software. The written text is often displayed on a computer monitor and can be viewed by the person who is deaf or hard of hearing, as it is created. At Drexel University, students with documented disabilities who are eligible to use this auxiliary aid, as a reasonable accommodation, will be provided a written translation or an e-mailed copy within 24 hours of the class. Copies are also sent to ODS by the Service Provider. ODS conducts a review of the translations, using a system of random sampling. In the event students with disabilities have concerns about the quality or timeliness of receiving the translations, it is the responsibility of the student to notify ODS immediately.
When CART or Typewell are a reasonable and appropriate auxiliary aid, qualified and professional Service Providers are contracted by the University. Once a student has been approved to use CART as an auxiliary aid at Drexel University, there may be a need to request services for campus meetings and events. For additional information regarding requesting accommodations for deafness or hearing loss, go to: Requesting Auxiliary Aids, Accommodations & Services.
When students are requesting CART services, the CART Request Form needs to be completed and submitted to the office. A 72-hour advance notice is necessary for securing Service Providers, but every effort will be made to accommodate approved requests. The forms are currently available at ODS and on-line at Requesting Service Providers.
Service Providers are responsible for introducing themselves to the faculty member of each course or meeting/activity. Service providers need to arrive and be ready to start the service provision at the beginning of each class.
