Captioning
Captioning is a method of creating a verbatim record of the spoken word. It allows students with disabilities a real-time dictation of the spoken word during a classroom or event. The verbatim record is created by a trained Service Provider and services are contracted by Office of Disability Services (ODS). At Drexel University, students with documented disabilities are provided with a written record or an e-mailed copy within 24 hours of the class, if they are eligible for the service. ODS also receives a copy of the written record and performs a periodic review of the captioning delivery. If students have concerns about the quality or timeliness of receiving the captioned material, the needs to student to notify ODS immediately.
Service Providers are responsible for introducing themselves to the faculty member of each course or meeting/activity. Service Providers need to arrive and be ready to start the service provision at the beginning of each class.
When captioning is a reasonable and appropriate auxiliary aid, qualified and professional captionists are contracted by the University. Once a student has been approved to use captioning as an auxiliary aid, there may be a need to request services for campus meetings and events. When students are requesting captioning services, the Captioning Request Form needs to be completed and submitted to ODS. A 72-hour advance notice is necessary for securing Service Providers, but every effort will be made to accommodate approved requests. The forms are available in ODS and on-line at: Requesting Service Providers.
