Accommodation Verification Letter

When an individual with a disability has requested and is approved to use reasonable and appropriate auxiliary aids, academic adjustments, and services, it is listed in the individual’s Accommodation Verification Letter (AVL) from the Office of Disability Services (ODS). When the individual shares the AVL with those they are requesting accommodations from, i.e. the faculty/staff member or supervisor, individuals are encouraged to share the information in a confidential manner.

Academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services provide a modification to the academic environment, but cannot lower academic requirements of a course or program. Individuals with disabilities need to meet the essential functions of their positions, with or without accommodations.  In other words, the provision of accommodations and services due to disability cannot fundamentally alter the nature of the course or program or change the essential functions of a position.
