Alternative Format Policy
In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and other applicable federal and state laws, the University ensures that people with disabilities will have access to its programs and activities. When the impact of a documented disability supports an individual’s request for alternative formats, as an accommodation, the Office of Disability Services (ODS) will secure the approved format in a timely manner.
1. Employees and students who are eligible to receive required reading materials in a format which is different from the format provided, may request an alternative format from ODS. Alternative formats may include, but are not limited to, required reading materials on CD or audiotape, large print, or Braille. For additional information regarding eligibility and requesting accommodations, go to: Requesting Accommodations.
2. If it has been determined that alternative formats are an appropriate accommodation for an individual with a disability at Drexel University, specific requests need to be made to ODS. For additional information about requesting specific materials in an alternative format, go to: Requesting Alternative Formats.
3. ODS will attempt to secure the appropriate format from an outside entity or agency. Individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to plan ahead for academic and employment needs, in order for ODS to provide the materials in a timely manner. Although every effort will be made to secure the alternative format as soon as possible, it may take weeks to secure the required reading from an outside entity or agency.
4. When alternative formats are not available from an outside entity or agency, ODS will arrange to have the materials converted. For additional information about converting required materials, go to: Converting Required Reading Materials.
5. Individuals with disabilities may need to check out equipment/materials from ODS for auxiliary aids, accommodations, and services related to the delivery of services. For additional information regarding borrowing equipment/materials from ODS, go to: Equipment/Material Loan Agreement and Equipment/Material Loan.
6. In order to plan in a timely manner individuals with disabilities are encouraged to plan ahead. For example:
- Students with documented disabilities will benefit by submitting a list of required reading materials to ODS shortly after registering for the upcoming term/semester’s courses.
- Employees with documented disabilities are well served by collaborating with their supervisor and ODS to identify required reading materials prior to needing the materials to perform the essential functions of the position.
