Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Students enrolled in a college or university whose training programs are "an integral part of an established curriculum" may apply for curricular practical training authorization. At Drexel, undergraduate students who will be employed as part of the co-op program can receive CPT employment authorization. Graduate students in the Career-Integrated Education (CIE) program and in certain majors with mandatory internships can receive CPT employment authorization. Undergraduate and graduate students on the Center City and Queen Lane campuses receive CPT authorization for clinical assignments.

Note: undergraduates participating in the Co-op program must be full-time students in the 2 terms immediately preceeding their co-op cycle. You CANNOT take a vacation in the 2 terms immediately preceeding your co-op cycle. Sophomores in the fall/winter co-op cycle are exempted from this requirement.

TO APPLY FOR CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING:
BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR CO-OP OR CIE ASSIGNMENT, bring the following to the ISSS Office:

  • Your passport
  • Your I-94 card
  • Your most current I-20
  • If you are an undergraduate, bring the "blue form" from your co-op coordinator
  • If you are a graduate student, bring the authorization letter from the CIE coordinator
  • Center City and Queen Lane campus students who doing clinical assignments must bring a letter from your program director or academic advisor that describes the clinical experience and the beginning and ending dates of the clinical experience.

IF YOU BEGIN YOUR CO-OP, CIE OR CLINICAL ASSIGNMENT WITHOUT WRITTEN CPT AUTHORIZATION FROM ISSS, YOU WILL BE OUT OF STATUS. USCIS HAS ROUTINELY DENIED REINSTATEMENT TO STUDENTS WHO WORK WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION.

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS WHO ARE AUTHORIZED FOR 12 OR MORE MONTHS OF CPT ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR POST-COMPLETION OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING (OPT).
