Symantec AntiVirus: General
Information
Configuring Symantec Anti-Virus for Live Update
IRT recommends all computer account holders, users of the Drexel
domain, Exchange and DrexelOne, verify the following settings for
Symantec AntiVirus protection on each computer they use, whether
on campus or off. This software is available for both the Windows
and Macintosh platforms. Most viruses affect the Windows environment.
First, download Symantec AntiVirus software from the Drexel CD,
distributed throughout the year from the University libraries, or
from the Drexel software server: ftp://software.drexel.edu.
It is important to remove old versions of Symantec before installing
the new one.
After installing the software in Windows, open the program from
the System Tray in the lower right hand corner of your Task Bar.
The shield icon represents Symantec AntiVirus program. Under the
File menu, choose Scheduled Updates. The window will display the
currently scheduled day and time, usually Friday at 8 p.m. Click
on the Schedule button to change the day and time to perform the
live update when your computer will be on. Symantec AntiVirus will
perform the update to the virus definitions by connecting to Symantec’s
site automatically at the scheduled time.
You can also schedule automatic virus scans to occur at a time
following the Live Update.
At any time, you can perform manual LiveUpdate, especially when
a new virus is announced. Simply open the Symantec software and
click on the Live Update button. Symantec provides new virus definitions
through this method weekly, except in instances of major outbreaks.

Symantec’s security website also provides Intelligent Updates
which are current on a daily basis but must be downloaded manually.
