Handling Used Computers
Departments purchasing new computers for use by staff members have several options for disposing
of the computers that are being replaced.
1. If the old computer is of value for use by another staff member in the department, it may be
reassigned within the department.
2. If the old computer has no further use in the department but would be of use to a staff member
at home, the department may give permission for the staff member to take the computer home.
3. If the old computer has no further use in the department and is not needed for home use, the
department may donate the computer to a non-profit agency with which one or more of the
department's staff is associated. The recipient agency should provide a thank you letter to the
Office of Institutional Advancement for tax purposes.
4. If the old computer is still functional but has no further use to the department, the
department may contact IRT to remove the computer.
5. If the computer is clearly broken and has no further use to anyone, the department should
dispose of it in accordance with established safety procedures. Departments should contact
Mike Smith (ext. 1504) in Facilities Management to make arrangements. There is a
cost associated with disposal of broken computers and electronic components.
