HIGH-SPEED PARALLEL COMPUTING
IS UP AND RUNNING AT DREXEL
The Office of Information Resources and Technology is pleased to
announce a new high performance parallel computing facility now
available for faculty and student research at Drexel University.
The IBM RS/6000 S-80 was acquired by the College of Engineering
in 2001 with funds received from a National Science Foundation Grant
and an IBM SUR Grant by professors B. Farouk, R. Cairncross, C.
Kastinins, A Zavaliangas , and A. Zerva. This parallel computer
is a powerful tool for numerical computation and has the potential
to greatly facilitate computational research efforts. It is available
to researchers in all colleges of the University including the Drexel
College of Medicine.
The parallel machine is an IBM RS/6000 S-80 Enterprise Server which
offers high speed performance and scalability. Utilizing IBM copper
chip technology, the 12-way S-80 is among the most powerful of UNIX
servers. This server provides a shared memory computing environment
with low latency, high bandwidth communication between processors.
A parallel computing server of this type provides many advantages
including a stable environment, software tools for converting programs
to parallel processing, and lower costs of operation than other
massively parallel systems.
Please complete the account
request form to obtain an account on the system. If you are
a student, you will be asked to provide a faculty sponsor for your
work. You will receive an account on the machine within 24 hours.
As use of the machine increases, seminars and user group sessions
will be arranged to share information about the exciting research
being done using the S-80.
