Toward a More Robust
Network: Major Changes Due
Major modifications to the Drexel network will begin at 8 a.m.
on the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 6.
At that time, the oldest portion of the Drexel network (the one
where IP = 129.25.xx.xx), will begin the process of reconfiguring
from a "flat" network (where everything is connected equally
to everything else) to a collection of sub networks. This provides
both more space (the flat network is very wasteful of resources)
and more security (you are vulnerable to a smaller universe of devices
sharing your network space).
Other than better service in the end, what does this mean for you?
* If you are in Center City, East Falls, or in the residence halls
in University City, you are not affected. (Quick check, your IP
address = 144.118.xx.xx). These newer portions of the Drexel network
are not in the currently "flat" 129.25.xx.xx domain.
* If your IP address is provided dynamically from the DHCP server,
you need to turn off your computer and other devices at the end
of the day on Tuesday, Nov. 5, and re-start them after 8 a.m. on
Wednesday morning. The DHCP server will do the job for you.
* If your server or printer or other network-connected device has
a static IP address in the 129.25.xx.xx domain, you need to reconfigure
the "subnet mask". Visit http://inside.drexel.edu/networking/subnet
for more information.
Any computer or other device showing the wrong network configuration
on Wednesday morning will be disconnected from the network. In that
case, you will have to call 215-895-2698 for help.
This is the essential first step in a much larger project to provide
better service on the Drexel network. Stay tuned for future steps,
some of which will require additional reconfigurations.
