Campus Computing Infrastructure
Kenneth S. Blackney is Interim
Director of Campus Computing Infrastructure. Until a permanent director is
named, voice communications are being led by
Dr. Jan Biros.
This department maintains a stable level of service and also provides a
consultative role to integrate the myriad technology components within the
University. The result is greater economies of scale and steady, controlled
progress in the areas of server support, voice, data, and video.
The Director's primary focus is on the planning and coordination of strategic
projects involving network communications and server support. Duties include
providing the leadership to integrate any technologies proposed by departmental
and research groups into the overall campus computing and telecommunications
architecture. Administrative duties include oversight of the daily operation
of the Department as well as pursuing externally funded projects.
Functionally organized "Groups" within the CCI Department include:
- Data/Video Communications: With the upgrade of the entire campus
infrastructure, staff will play a key role in making available the latest
networking technologies to the University community. Duties include
maintaining the cable facility, resolving problems, moves, and installs and
managing the increased complexity of network communications. Video, currently
in its infancy at Drexel, will require increasing attention by this Group.
- Operations Group: The purpose of this Group is to provide end user,
7 x 24, computing support for ongoing production systems including job scheduling,
set-up, data entry, job processing, delivery of computing output, data recovery,
and scanning processes. As campus computing migrates from single mainframe
platforms to a client/sever architecture, this Groups focus is the management
of the institutions "server farm". Servers currently supported by this Group
include finance, human resources, payroll, student information, the library,
institutional advancement, data warehousing, academic computing and a number
of web (e.g. WEB Stoli, Drexel's Home Page, etc.) servers.
- Systems Group: The goal of this Group is to provide seamless support
for all administrative and academic computing needs of the University with
simultaneous support of applications and systems programming across all server
platforms as noted above. Maintenance of an efficient and stable means of access
to central computing systems as well as operating system support (e.g. UNIX and NT)
for all platforms.
