Sontag Foundation Distinguished Scientist Awards
Deadline: March 21, 2012 at noon
Funding: up to $600,000 over 4 years
Purpose: The Sontag Foundation is looking for early career scientists with the potential to create new waves across the brain cancer field, increasing survival rates and improving recovery for patients. The Foundation seeks a cure or treatments to make brain cancer a manageable chronic disease.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a biomedical science, medicine, or other health-related field. At the time of application, applicants must hold their first independent full-time faculty appointment at the level of assistant professor, independent researcher or equivalent position at an academic, research or medical institution within the United States. Applicant's initial faculty appointment must have been made no earlier than March 1, 2009.

Parkinson Study Group
Deadline: March 23, 2012
Funding: up to $50,000
Purpose: The Mentored Clinical Research Award will support a new investigator for a one year project in patient oriented research in Parkinson’s disease (PD) or other parkinsonian disorders under the mentorship of an experienced investigator. The research plan should address unmet needs of people living with PD, have the potential for broad application among the PD community, and lead to advances in clinically relevant treatment options. 
Eligibility: Clinicians and scientists who are within five years of having completed formal training.

Motorola Mobility Foundation
Deadline: March 23, 2012
Funding: Up to $25,000
Purpose: The Empowerment Grants program is designed to help U.S.-based nonprofit organizations develop mobile applications and use mobile technology that will help transform and benefit the communities they serve.
Eligibility:  Applicants must demonstrate ways in which digital and mobile technology can be used to further a nonprofit’s mission, and be aligned with funding priorities in the areas of education, health and wellness, community, and arts and culture.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)
Deadline: March 26, 2012 (Expression of Interest)
Funding: up to $1,050,000 over 3 years
Purpose: JDRF is encouraging collaborations among bioengineers, chemists, immunologists, transplant researchers, and pancreatic beta cell biologists to incorporate engineering concepts and designs into efforts toward improving islet encapsulation as a key component of cell replacement therapy for T1D.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (P)
Deadline:  March 27, 2012 (LOI) at 10:00 a.m. PST
Funding:  Foundation expects to invest up to $6 million towards this project over 3 years.
Purpose:  To develop a prototype and detailed commercialization plan for an immunity assessment tool that can more accurately measure vaccination coverage in the developing world.
Eligibility: The Foundation will invite select applicants to submit full proposals based on a scored review of the letters of inquiry. Proposals will be assessed by a panel of internal and external reviewers.

Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP)
Deadline: March 28, 2012 (LOI)
Funding: $1,350,000 over 3 years
Purpose:  The HFSP supports innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems with emphasis approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries. There are two types of grants: Young Investigators' Grants and Program Grants.
Eligibility: Teams must include two to four members, with not more than one member from any one country, unless critical for the interdisciplinary nature of the project. Where two or more team members are from the same country they may establish a local or national interdisciplinary collaboration as a component of an international team, and will be considered as 1.5 team members for budgetary purposes.

Wildlife Conservation Society

Funding: Up to $250,000
Purpose: For projects that demonstrate effective interventions for wildlife adaptation to climate change.
Eligibility: Unable to support: the assisted migration of species, capital costs for fee title acquisitions or conservation easements, building construction, offshore marine conservation, political lobbying, organizational capacity building, captive breeding, zoo exhibits, or lethal eradication of wildlife.

Hitachi Foundation

Funding: Up to $40,000
Purpose: Yoshiyama Young Entrepreneurs Program identifies and supports inspiring young entrepreneurs whose work helps alleviate domestic poverty. Open to entrepreneurs who are operating viable businesses in the United States with the dual purpose of making a difference and making a living.
Eligibility: Eligible entrepreneurs must have launched their business before they reached age 30. Their business must be between one and five years old.

National Academy of Engineering Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize

Funding: $500,000
Purpose: The Russ Prize will recognize achievements in bioengineering in its initial years. Examples include research, education, or product development in such areas as biomedical instrumentation, separation, and control systems; aerospace biomedical engineering; diagnostic technologies; applied genetic engineering; pharmaceutical processing; prosthetic technologies;               bio molecular engineering; medical engineering; and applied physiological systems.
Eligibility: The Russ Prize may be awarded to an individual or a group of individuals contributing to the same achievement(s).

ANTHROPOLOGY

The Wenner-Gren Foundation
Deadline: May 1, 2012
Funding: $25,000
Purpose: The Post-Ph.D. Research Grants program contributes to the Foundation's overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation.
Eligibility: Applications are accepted from scholars who are close to completing their doctorate or equivalent degree; however, the grant cannot be awarded until the degree is completed.

AUTISM

Autism Speaks Family Service Community Grants
Deadline: April 8, 2012 (LOI)
Funding: Up to $25,000
Purpose: The focus of these grants will be on proposals that serve to build the field of services for individuals with autism and expand the capacity to effectively serve this growing community.
Eligibility: Grant proposals must address one of the following areas of need: Education, Recreation/Community Activities, and Young Adult/Adults Services. Autism Speaks Family Services Community Grants will partner with other organizations to provide additional funding for projects that match our objectives. They do not fund scientific research projects.

Autism Speaks Treatment Research
Deadline: May 2, 2012
Funding: up to $300,000
Purpose: Autism Speaks invites grant applications to conduct innovative clinical studies of evidence-based therapies and novel treatment approaches for children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) including complementary and alternative forms of health care; pharmacological and/or behavioral treatments; and evaluation of the efficacy, safety, or therapeutic benefits of interventions.
Eligibility: Investigators holding full or part-time faculty appointments, professional affiliations or equivalent at accredited academic, medical, or educational institutions are eligible to apply. Applications will not be accepted from individuals or proprietary organizations to support the research and development of products or treatments for profit.  Applicants are restricted to one proposal per review cycle as Principal Investigator.

American Cancer Society Research Scholar Awards
Deadline: April 2, 2012
Funding: Grants range from $150,000 up to $2 million
Purpose: To support researchers, junior faculty, and new or mid-career investigators who have made seminal contributions that have changed the direction of cancer research.
Eligibility: Must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals or permanent resident. Each separate award requires a minimum career or degree requirement.

Robert Wood Johnson FoundationNew Connections- Junior Investigators (P)
Deadline: May 5, 2012 by 3:00 p.m. EST
Funding: Up to $75,000 for 2 years
Purpose: New Connections: Increasing Diversity of RWJF Programming aims to expand the diversity of perspectives that inform RWJF programming and introduce new researchers and scholars to the Foundation, while simultaneously helping to meet staff needs for data analysis.
Eligibility: Junior Investigator applicants to the New Connections program must have completed a doctorate by November 2003 or later; be from a group that has been historically underrepresented in the research activities supported by RWJF, such as people from ethnic or racial minority groups, first-generation college graduates and people from low-income communities; be a first-time RWJ grantee.

Robert Wood Johnson FoundationNew Connections- Midcareer Consultants P

Funding: Up to $75,000 for 2 years
Purpose: To facilitate Midcareer Consultants' connections to liaisons at RWJF. Liaisons will either be Research and Evaluation program officers or program officers from the team with which the Midcareer Consultant is working. They will provide grantees with guidance about the team's research and evaluation needs. Liaisons help explain the particular program areas at RWJF and how the Foundation operates
Eligibility: Applicants should have no less than 10 and no more than 15 years of research and/or evaluation experience related to relevant health and health care fields, be a first time principal investigator/program contract grantee of RWJF; demonstrate how a New Connections Midcareer Consultant award would impact their career development.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH

The World of Children Health Award
Deadline: April 1, 2012
Funding: Up to $50,000
Purpose: Will provide up to $50,000 to an individual who has made a significant contribution to children in the fields of health, medicine, or the sciences. This person will have created or managed a sustainable program that has significantly contributed to the health and well-being of children.
Eligibility: Nominees must have been working on behalf of children over and above their normal employment and have been engaged in their efforts for a minimum of ten years.

CROHN’S AND COLITIS

Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America
Deadline: May 1, 2012
Funding: Up to $117,000 for 1 to 3 years, plus indirect costs
Purpose:  Funding available for Senior Research Awards and Career Development Awards. To provide established researchers with funds to generate sufficient preliminary data to become competitive for funds from other sources, such as the National Institute of Health (NIH).
Eligibility: Applicant must hold an M.D, Ph.D., or equivalent and be employed by an institution (public non-profit, private non-profit or government) engaged in health care and/or health related research.

CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Research Grants

Funding: Up to $90,000 per year for up to 2 years
Purpose: To encourage the development of new information that contributes to the understanding of the basic etiology and pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis. Consideration will be given to those projects that provide insight into the development of new therapies for CF.
Eligibility: Applicants must be independent investigators, need not be U.S. citizens or hold a U.S. permanent visa to apply for this award.

Alex C. Walker Educational and Charitable Foundation

Purpose: Funds market approaches for addressing economic imbalances and promoting a sustainable economy. Investigate the causes of economic imbalances; investigate the effects of the global financial system and monetary policy in fostering a sustainable economy; investigate causes tending to destroy or impair the free-enterprise system; explore and develop market-based solutions.
Eligibility: Applicants should clearly describe how project meets one or more of the first four purposes of the Foundation. All projects should also have a plan to meet the last purpose - disseminate information on the results and findings. In addition, please describe the scope of your project and your tax status.

The Brady Education Foundation

Purpose: The Brady Education Foundation seeks to close the achievement gap by increasing the school readiness of children at risk for poor school outcomes due to environmental factors associated with living in poverty. The foundation pursues its mission by promoting collaboration between researchers and educators via the funding of research and program evaluations in early education.
Eligibility: The Foundation funds two types of projects: evaluations of existing model programs, and

ENERGY DEVELOPMENT

Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation
Deadline: May 3, 2012 (Executive Summary)
Funding: Up to $1 million
Purpose: Established by the U.S. and Israeli governments to generate mutually beneficial cooperation between the private sectors of the U.S. and Israeli high tech industries, including start-ups and established organizations. BIRD provides both matchmaking services between U.S. and Israeli companies, as well as funding covering up to 50 percent of project development and product commercialization costs.  BIRD's scope extends to Communications, Life Sciences, Electronics, Electro-optics, Software, Homeland Security, Renewable and Alternative Energy and other sectors of the hi-tech industry.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development (P)

Funding: Up to $250,000
Purpose: For innovative prevention and treatment approaches for pregnant women and newborns in poor, hard-to-reach communities around the world. Funding for transformative approaches that cut across three main domains: (i) science & technology; (ii) service delivery; and (iii) demand-side innovation.
Eligibility: Proposed solutions for seed funds may have been previously tested (preliminary data not required), but should not be current standard practice; however, innovative variations on existing approaches may be considered.

Purpose: Grants will be awarded to formal campaigns related to constructing or remodeling a current or new building for nonprofit organizations whose missions support one of the program's three focus areas (i.e., arts, education, or human services).
Eligibility: Organizations applying for funding from the US Airways Community Foundation must be IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that are located in and provide services to the major metropolitan areas of Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington, DC. Please note that only hard costs related to new building construction or major renovation/expansion of an existing facility is eligible for support.

Purpose: The Mental Health and Well-Being program funds programs/ initiatives that align with its mission of reducing health disparities among returning American veterans and the mentally ill. NEUROSCIENCE

McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience
Deadline: April 2, 2012 (Application)
Funding: Up to $300,000
Purpose: McKnight Memory and Cognitive Disorders Award assists scientists working to apply the knowledge achieved through basic research to human brain disorders that affect memory or cognition.
Interest in proposals that address memory or cognition under normal and pathological conditions.
Eligibility: Projects restricted to the creation of conventional mouse knockouts in candidate disease genes identified by association studies, or to broadly overexpress those genes, are discouraged. In addition, projects to perform genetic interaction screens on disease genes in model organisms will not be considered, unless the project includes substantive specific aims that investigate the disease relevance of any new genes so discovered in human or mammalian model systems.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Connections Grants
Deadline: May 22, 2012 (concept papers)
Funding: Up to $170,000
Purpose: Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesityestablishes a research base for policy and environmental factors that influence healthy eating and body weight in children, as well as effective policy/environmental strategies to reverse childhood obesity epidemic.
Eligibility: Must have completed a doctorate or terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D, MD, JD) within 10 years of the start date of the grant propose a project that spans 12 to 18 months in duration, and devote at least 25 percent of their time to the project.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Roadmaps to Health (P)

Funding: Up to $200,000 over 2 years
Purpose: The Roadmaps to Health Community Grants (Community Grants) will support communities to implement policy or system changes to address one of the social or economic factors that, as defined by the County Health Rankings, most strongly influence health outcomes in their community. These include: education; employment and income; family and social support; and community safety.
Eligibility: Must be a nonprofit organization that is tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

SPINAL CORD RESEARCH

Morton Cure Paralysis Fund
Deadline: April 30, 2012
Funding: Up to $75,000
Purpose: The Morton Cure Paralysis Fund (MCPF) is committed to developing effective therapies or cures for paralysis associated with spinal cord injury and other disorders of the central nervous system.
Eligibility: Senior scientists may serve as principal investigators. It is assumed that MCPF will not be the sole support for any project. Additional sources of funding, both granted and potential, must be listed.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

The World of Children Humanitarian Award
Deadline:  April 1, 2012
Funding:  Up to $50,000
Purpose:  The World of Children Humanitarian Award will provide up to $50,000 to an individual who has made a significant contribution to children in social services, education, or humanitarian services. This person will have created or managed a sustainable program that has significantly contributed to children's opportunities to be safe, to learn, and to grow. Previous awards have been for work with disabled children in Nepal, the rescue of children from sex slavery in Boca Chica, and the creation of libraries for children in Africa without access to books.
Eligibility: Nominees for humanitarian/health awards must have been working on behalf of children over and above their normal employment and have been engaged in their efforts for a minimum of ten years.

William T. Grant Foundation
