Microsoft will be releasing its new operating system named Windows Vista on January 30. This page is intended to keep you informed regarding the schedule of support and implementation that will occur at Drexel. While Vista beta has been available for download and many have taken advantage of that, it is not a finished product from Microsoft, and it is not a supported product at Drexel.
Given the myriad of implications that a new OS with major changes has on our enterprise systems and the many academic and administrative applications used on campus, it is necessary to do substantial hardware and software testing prior to deploying a new OS throughout campus and supporting it. Documentation and training materials must be revised, hardware and applications must be tested, and consultants must develop expertise with the product.
The subsequent pages give you information about hardware requirements, software compatibility issues and support materials and services available. In addition, the IRT Tech Update electronic newsletter will contain information in each issue.
To accomplish this, IRT has a comprehensive plan to ready Drexel to deploy and implement MS Vista. Because of the complexities, this will take some time and IRT plans full deployment and full support by Fall Term '07. Based on discussions with the Computing Advisory Committee, the recommendation is that you do not install Vista at this time or any time soon and if you do, understand that IRT cannot provide support for you if you have difficulties which interfere with your work.
What is Windows Vista?
Windows Vista the newest operating system by Microsoft for desktop and laptop computers.
IRT recommends installing the Business or Ultimate (depending on the specifications of your computer).
The release date is January 30, 2007. We recommend that you do not install the OS as soon as it comes out. It is better to wait until testing is complete and the first service pack is released.
The minimum requirements for Vista Business are:
Processor - at least 800 MHz
System Memory - 512 MB
Hard Drive - 20 GB
Hard Drive Free Space - 15 GB
Microsoft provides an Upgrade Advisor that allows you to check the compatibility of your system to Vista.
